Look at that fruit salad! Is it not the most beautiful fruit salad you’ve ever seen? Well, it was positively divine. And it came from a street cart. And it was $4. A lot of people avoid street carts like diseased villains around here, but the ones that offer more than Halal food can be deliciously affordable.
I was driven to a smoothie/fruit street cart after I recently paid $6 for a smoothie at Jamba Juice. Six hard-earned dollars for fruit and ice! Come on, guys, that’s absurd. I found a smoothie cart outside my office building that makes smoothies for $3, or $4 for a large. Additionally, they also offer fresh cut fruit salads. I am a huge fruit salad fan but usually avoid them because they are expensive ($3-5) and filled with filler fruit like honeydew melon and cantaloupe.
Enter the street cart fruit salad. Not only is it GINORMOUS (it really came with the rubber band around the container to hold it together), you can customize the fruit included, thereby eliminating fruits you don’t like (no honeydew melon, please!). Thus, I ended up with the following variety: strawberries, watermelon, grapes, banana, mango, cantaloupe, pineapple, orange, apple, blueberries, raspberries, grapefruit and kiwi. That is 13 different fruits whereas most fruit salads only have four ingredients. Also, its generous portion size lasted me two meals, which made it well worth it. I allow myself this treat about once a week, which means I have now cultivated a relationship with the cart workers. As they see me walking up I hear, “Herro Rady! Fru’ sala’ no honeydew!” Gooood morning!

Yes! I love the fruit carts especially because of the prices. While starbucks charges 90 cents (!!) for ONE banana, the fruit cart sells 3 for $1. and usually they are large bananas…so more for your money!
Herro rady!
Ha! Honeydon’t!
