Ahoy, mate! Eleven military vessels hosting thousands of the nation’s finest Marines, Coast Guard and Sailors arrive in New York City today to mark the beginning of the 23rd annual Fleet Week. Until moving to NYC, my concept of Fleet Week was solely based on the Sex and the City episode, Anchors Away, which is a shocking accurate portrayal of the night scene. I have since become aware of the family-centered daytime activities that are more feats of strength—eating contests and a tug-of-war competition. Even better, and perhaps more stereotypical, is the viewing of Top Gun at the Intrepid Museum. (I definitely envision a live sailor rendition of You’ve Lost that Lovin Feelin to accompany such a viewing.)
For a full list of family activities, check out the Intrepid Museum Fleet Week Schedule. Others may prefer to find the sailors strutting around town in their summer white uniforms. (Yet another sign summer is only 5 days away!) Now some ladies are quite taken with the uniform, so I highly suggest knowing your officer ranks which are clearly established on the lapels and shirt. True to Sex and the City form, there will be many a sailor party around town and the invites literally come from standing on a sidewalk. It seems rather appropriate that Sex and the City 2 opens tomorrow, doesn’t it? Here’s the trailer again if you’ve missed it—God knows the combo of screaming girls at the opening and sailor sightings will undoubtedly result in hearing loss over the course of the long weekend.
